Where Can You Work?

If you're under 18, there are laws in New York State (and other states) about where you can work, depending on your age. Those laws were made to protect you. In New York State, you can work in these jobs if your parents fill out a form (working papers) giving their permission:

If you are 13 or younger

  • Babysitting
  • Newspaper delivery
  • Acting or performing

If you are 14 or 15

  • Office work
  • Grocery store
  • Retail work
  • Restaurants
  • Movie theaters

If you are 16 or 17

At this age, you can work at any job that is not considered hazardous.

Jobs and activities that are considered hazardous:

  • Mining
  • Logging
  • Meatpacking
  • Demolition
  • Roofing
  • Operating motor vehicles or forklifts
  • Using electric meat slicers
  • Working with saws, explosives, most power-driven machines, or radioactive materials
